ESTES MODEL ROCKETS(Scroll down to view Estes model rocket kit selection) Most people believe that Vern Estes, the founder of Estes Industries, was the originator of the model rocket. In fact, it was Orville Carlisle, a shoe salesman and pyrotechnist from Nebraska. Orville was the one who came up with the idea of a premanufactured rocket engine to be used in a reusable model rocket. He took this idea to G. Harry Stine, a writer for Popular Mechanics magizine. G. Harry Stine started the first model rocket company, with Orville making the model rocket engines in his basement. This company was called Model Missiles. (Model Missiles eventually became Centuri, then Quest) Soon the demand exceeded Orvilles ability to produce these engines , so Orville approached Vern Estes of the Mile High Fireworks Co. Vern Estes liked the idea of mass producing model rocket engines and began tinkering with designs for a machine to do just that. Soon "Mable" was born. Mable was the pet name for the machine that Vern Estes had come up with in his back yard. It was capable of producing the little engines at a much faster rate then hand ramming. The performance was also more consistent from motor to motor. In 1958, Estes industries was born. A couple years later, the first Estes model rocket kits and rocket engines were being offered by mail order and shipped from coast to coast. Estes Ind. may not have invented model rockets, but they sure changed the way kids and adults learned about rocket flight. So now you know. Today Estes model rockets come in several skill levels. RTF (Ready to Fly) model rockets are ready to fly with little or no assembly or painting. E2X model rockets require simple assembly and no painting to look like the rocket pictured on the package. Skill level I, II, III and IV model rockets require assembly and painting. In most cases the higher the skill level the more parts or steps in assembly that is required. We like to think of the skill level as being more of a patience level. Some of the higher skill level model rockets will need prior building and flying experience, due to being staged rockets.
